Instagram is not difficult
Now a lot of people have been asking me this?
Why am I not getting as much engagement, why is my following dipping? Why is it not consistent anymore? Why do my hash tags not work as effectively?
Instagram has changed its algorithm and the best part is, it has basically gone back to the beginning in my personal opinion. So all of these people that are whining about it changing don’t understand what the platform was originally made for.
Though I understand that not seeing a lot of posts from people you care about can be frustrating or seeing 10 from the same dude in a row is annoying it is just the way that it is and if anything is going to make the platform better for you and what you want to achieve.
So if you are trying to make an impact on instagram, I’m going to give you a little low down on what you need to be doing and why if you follow it, none of these changes are going to matter to you.
If you are just on instagram though to have some fun and post your pictures then you may not find the rest of this video appealing and I am just going to delve into the extensive research that I have done on it.
Instagram is going to reward posts with high engagement, so we are looking into the likes, comments, DMs and everything that goes along with the post so sometimes a pretty picture isn’t going to cut it. You need to engage.
The easiest way to do this is be consistent on instagram stories, post what you are doing, ask questions with the poll feature, get involved in other people’s stories. Reach out to people, interact and engage, build relationships.
It is going to be working in both directions as well, you can have a lot of people interacting with you but if you do not give back to your audience then instagram is not going to place your posts above others. So if you are sitting in that 1,000 + margin where you have a audience base but its not like 100K + yet then this is really going to help you grow.
Even if you get those generic computer responses of a thumbs up or something just reply with a heart, or something similar, it still counts as engagement.
Now, I’ve always been told that timing means a lot on instagram and I’ve hardly ever followed it but there is a lot of science behind it. Wherever you are in the world most people check their phones first thing in the morning before work, just after working hours and then finally before bed. So these are definitely the best times to post in order to reach out to your following as much as you can.
But you do need to ensure that you are then available for maybe 30 mins — 1 hour afterwards. So that when those people engage, you can snap it right up and bounce to and from with them Instagram will see that as quality content and boost your post.
Now similar to Facebook, Instagram logs how long someone is viewing your content. So how are you going to stop someone from scrolling past your content and moving onto something else?
Captions! You need to capture their attention. An engaging, inspiring, creative caption is going to make people want to explore more into the content. So don’t just post simple things like “hump day” go into more detail, how is your week going, are you looking forward to the weekend? Ask people what they are doing this weekend?
It is a good reason why videos are becoming popular on Instagram, people actually have to watch them and if they are intriguing, then they will watch it for a whole minute!
Now, hash tags. Are they relevant to your post? Or have you copied and pasted them? Now I’m bad for this one so during this research it is my main priority to change immediately. You can actually get shadowbanned for it, which sucks major balls by the way.
So again, it’s making genuine content, think about your post, the image, the caption and relate your hash tags to it. No more instadaily and Igfam! Optimize the new follow hash tag feature, follow what you regularly post too and see how you rank compared to the top rated ones in it.
Instagram is looking for authenticity and this is what I mean by it is going back to its roots. In the beginning people were able to use the platform to express themselves, it was different than anything else that was out there and another creative way for people to show off their talents. So Instagram doesn’t want to see comments that say ‘great pic’ or ‘nice feed’ they want you to be creative and express yourself.
So, go into your explore page. Search hash tags that excite you, then like and comment on it. But actually read the caption; actually give two donkeys about the content that is in front of you and response to it. Someone hit a new squat PB of 100kg, then cheer for them! Don’t just go ‘nice one’ because that isn’t going to start a conversation is it? And that my friend is what you want.
All instagram is doing is filtering out the real from the fake, so if you are genuine, it doesn’t matter if you have 200 followers or 200k! If you want to build an audience then the structure has marginally changed and you just have to adapt to the platform, which isn’t difficult.
Go forth my pretties and engage with anyone that interests you.
