Why && What
I believe that one cannot be a full person without inspiration. If you throw a child into a life without a positive role model to help shape their goals, and therefore actions, then they may not have any. And without goals, one’s actions aren’t purposeful, do not address the “bigger picture”, and therefore are very likely to be negative.
I certainly would not be who I am today without my role models. Without the parents I have, the friends I hold or have held, the people I’ve looked up to, the relationships I’ve went through, and my crazy younger siblings wonderfully inspirational ideas, I would not be where I am. I may not have goals, I may not have gone to college, I may not have learned the value of love, of self-respect, of respecting others, and a million other virtues that I like to think I hold.
Therefore, because I believe in the power of a positive role model, I believe a that a peer mentorship program would be very beneficial to Milwaukee teens that are at risk for violent crime. By gaining proper relationships that these children may not easily receive at home, at school, or on the streets, they will hopefully be able to learn some of the things that I was fortunate enough to learn as I grew up, which would hopefully prevent some of the violent crime in Milwaukee.
