I’ve heard from people who have lived elsewhere that Americans are comparatively obsessed with time. Like, we even measure distances in terms of time because that’s how important punctuality has become in our culture. I actually grew up with the mantra, “If you’re early you’re on time, if you’re on time you’re late, and if you’re late, you’re rude.”
I understand it to an extent, but I think more of us need to embrace the 5-minute window because THINGS HAPPEN in traffic, etc. and if we weren’t so hyped up on culturally-induced time-based anxiety maybe it could help us to be nicer to each other and more in-the-moment.
Or, we could just grow a prefrontal cortex and learn to manage our time and get over ourselves individually. Maybe that’s easier than an unlikely cultural shift.
