I hear what you’re saying. And yet, to call my response to Streep’s speech an attack, is perhaps just as unkind as you presume me to be. As a disabled woman, my goal with this piece was to call upon everyone to focus on human decency, dignity, and rights. As someone who has directly experienced violations of all three of those things, I have developed an edge to my voice, one that is weary of constant discrimination and surface-level advocacy. I also specifically acknowledged that I understand Streep was speaking at an awards ceremony rather than a policy forum. In no way am I condemning Streep. What she did was certainly notable, but now it’s up to all of us to dig deeper. Much deeper.
