What is Good Writing?
Good writing is the concise, coherent, and organized deliverance of words and thoughts. It consists of current and important information from valid sources. Correct grammar and spelling are key in establishing credibility within a published release.
Good writing applies rhetoric and word choice to appeal to the intended target audience. Every detail must be correctly represented to provide the best representation of a firsthand experience, to a secondhand viewer. The best writers have a unique stylistic flare that gives the piece a voice and sets the tone of the story.
Writing that is edited and improved frequently, results in being a better work. When writing, it is important to use higher level vocabulary words, but not those that may confuse a reader. Good writing is open to criticism and development. In reporting, it ought to be unbiased, truthful, and factual.
If a story is inaccurate, it can create mounds of controversy, and even ultimately/potentially, a lost job. It displays the “must know” details without unnecessarily lengthening the story. It is formatted in a way that is simplistic, yet not simple. It anticipates reader’s questions.
Good writing is original; it never copies other people’s works whatsoever. However it does draw from the inspiration of other’s; it is learned by actively practicing. Content and structure are equally as important in the world of writing.
Quality over quantity is a generally accepted rule in the industry. Writers should portray visual aspects in writing in order to elicit a certain response from the viewer. Good writing can adapt from national news to local news, and properly cater to it’s audiences wants and needs. In order to do this, audience analysis must take place prior to story development.
Unless the platform is a blog or autobiography, a story should always be told void of feelings, emotions, or personal opinions.
The point of “news” is to relay something NEW. The goal of good writing is to discover information that other’s have not.
