Why am I blogging?
No really, why??
Is it to fulfil my daydreams of being a writer or to market myself in this impossible climate, or perhaps I have something really interesting to say?
- Daydreams about being a writer
Maybe, I think most people have fancied the idea of writing. I don’t particularly think writing is a talent of mine. For starters, I’m a really slow reader, can’t spell for toffees (seriously, I think I have already corrected five words in this tiny paragraph — thanks Grammarly “www.grammarly.com”) and don’t really understand the meaning of commas. But I do know that the more I write the better I will get. So, perhaps this blog is for personal improvement.
2. Marketing myself
Absolutely, vanity aside! Anyone who graduates with a masters and then spends six months applying to all jobs imaginable before finding an internship will understand that connectivity has made finding a job possibly harder! Your CV is one of a hundred others that all have pretty much the same qualifications. Impossible job descriptions looking for an intern with a Masters, 10 years of experience and recently graduated. And to be honest, I think landing the interview depends partly on how annoyed the poor people are who are stuck going through the giant stack of CV’s. Probably wishing their firm wasn’t an environmental firm and they had more cash to employ a human resources department. To succeed in the game, you need to learn how to market yourself. Build the shiny LinkedIn profile and yes, maybe try blogging.
3. Maybe I have something interesting to say
I don’t particularly like the concept or today's need to “brand yourself” but I understand the necessity of science communication. We need to have more good information out there. We need to spread awareness about the environment and try and make people listen. At the very least, this blog is bound to get a few pity reads (thanks mom and boyfriend). Maybe through this handful of people I can make a small impact. So often we get lost in our little bubbles and start thinking that everyone knows basic science facts like seagrass is an essential habitat. But they don’t, half the time they don’t even know what seagrass is or that it is a favourite food of green sea turtles and dugongs (you know what a dugong is right?).

Fighting past all my own feelings of inadequacy for being a poor writer, there is shit that really needs to be written and spoken about! Science! Hello people, there is so so so much poor information out there and we NEED to learn more, we need to be flooded and inundated with good information so we can stop being idiots. And as is human nature, even when we know what we need to know, we are likely to still be idiots and go on using plastic straws and drinking out of plastic water bottles even though we are sitting next to a water fountain. But we have to keep trying and telling and changing.
So I am joining the blogging scene to tell some of my cool stories (cause I do some pretty cool stuff), to rant a little, annoy the kids who hate bad spelling and to help share knowledge and hopefully create change in some small way.

PS: and it has started today because I have finally replaced my seven-year-old brick of a laptop which was stuck together with duck tape with a sleek, light, fast and a rather pretty laptop.
