Yesterday was our last day of class in strict Ruby-land, as we’re gearing up to start Rails on Monday! We have a few projects over the weekend and I’ve been trying to concentrate on solidifying some of the more foundational pieces of the Ruby syntax, as I know things will quickly start to escalate once we Rails enters the tool belt.
Over the last couple of days, we spent a lot of time writing programs against tests and exploring more of the functionality of methods and how they work in the context of classes used over several files.
The weekly project is Blackjack, and the goal is to get a fully-functional game up and running that pits a human user against the computer and allows for a dynamic and interactive game following the rules of the game.
On Thursday, we did a project kickstarter-of-sorts together as a class to create a deck of cards, and though our weekly project deck implementation can’t use this exact implementation, it definitely provides a good jumping-off point.

Thursday was also my birthday (the big 3–0), and though I had such a good set-up involving a Lesley Gore reference and our Ruby debugging tool — named ‘Pry’ (you get the picture) — I had a ton of work to get done and decided to buckle down there and take a couple days off from the blog (the only ones I’ve missed since the start of the class!). It felt really disappointing to break my streak, but I think I made the right call to keep focused in the material.
I’ll be back at it here tomorrow. See you then!
