Design and its Elements

In the world today there are many different types of designers and different needs to be fulfilled by designers that all revolve around the over all idea of design. But what is design and why does it matter? Design in my opinion is just an idea because in my mind design cannot be defined as a single thing. Design is an overall idea that encompasses several elements in order to convey a message in a visually organized way. Because of the all encompassing elements of design we have masterpieces such as Van Gough’s “ Starry Night” pictured above.
The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a design and overall, a piece of art. The elements of design consist of seven components that include: point, line, form, movement, color, pattern, and texture. Each part plays a role in a design as each element is dependent upon another element. For example, in the picture below notice the sharp lines and patterns within the shapes, this would not be as evident if it were not for the negative space allowed by the form.

It is so important to implement different elements into a design because it adds interest. Each element is dependent upon another element to make a successful design. For example, if there were only lines in a drawing with no form of movement there would be no figure or subject shown. The simple line drawing below is made up of simple lines but the use of line shows movement.

The combination of elements adds balance to our own creativity, allowing us to be more organized in our design. Think about the famous painter Pablo Picasso, many of his paintings are so abstract that to some viewers they may seem disorganized and out of control but once the viewer understands the principles of design they can actually better understand the painting and see it as an organized design. For example, the painting below seems completely disorganized until you start recognizing the elements of design in the painting such as the repetition of color and cohesive movement and thickness of line. Once this knowledge is established, the design is seen as very thoughtful and organized.

Design is an idea that is supported by its seven elements that when used effectively, allow for a message to be delivered in a visually pleasing way.
