My World of Volleyball
Life can be hard to understand sometimes, however, I have always understood volleyball. Volleyball is an amazing sport. It is one thing that I can never get tired of. I should know because it probably would’ve happened already. I have been playing since I was eight years old and I honestly can’t remember a time when it wasn’t a part of my life. It brings out a part of me that nothing else does. When I am playing, I feel confident, exhilarated, in control of myself, and I also just have fun.
My favorite part of the game is defense/passing. I love when someone hits a ball hard and I have to get it up or if I have to chase down a ball. I have saved many balls that a lot of people wouldn’t think could be saved and that is one of the best things. Seeing the shocked faces of others when I get up from making an amazing save. It gives me a rush that nothing else does. The hard work that I put in pays off when I make those plays. It makes me feel accomplished to have the ability to perform.
I am a very competitive person and volleyball is one way that I feel I am able to be competitive. In grade school, it was always just something I enjoyed doing. It was a way to make friends and just have something to do. However, in high school, it became much more than that. I was very frustrated with my school team and I had played one year of club. When I decided to do club again my sophomore year, it was the best decision I had ever made. I always associated volleyball with having fun and since I wasn’t doing that while playing for my school, I decided to stop. It was a very hard decision, but it was definitely the right one. I always looked forward to club season because I was able to just have fun and enjoy the sport again like I did in grade school. I was still competitive, but I didn’t have all of the stress and frustration that I had during school season. I was able to get past the hard times of the sport and still enjoy it.
I have met so many amazing people through volleyball as well. One of my best friends is someone I met from playing. There is also someone that coached me and that I have coached with that is a huge part of my life. I don’t know where I would be if our paths had not crossed. Volleyball brings people together. It is a team sport and your team feels like your family. I will never forget the memories I have made and the relationships I have formed from playing the game and also coaching the game.
I enjoy coaching very much because I can share my skills and knowledge with others who also love the sport. I get so excited when I see that I have taught someone something and they are able to put it together. I have coached for five years and there is no better feeling than seeing the impact that I have on the players. The only other time I feel that happy and intense is when I am playing. There has always been a part of me that wonders what would’ve happened if I kept playing, but I then remind myself that if I would’ve kept playing in high school, I would not have had as much time to coach.
Volleyball is a sport, it is something you choose to do. It should always be fun because when it stops being fun, you don’t get the drive or the happiness that it can bring to your life. I hope my story has inspired someone else to try it out. Whether it be playing, coaching, or even just appreciating how much work is put into playing and coaching. It is a big part of my life and I hope it can be a big part of other peoples lives as well.
