Underground Coffeehouse

What do you think of when you hear about the Viking Union? Some might say they offer places to eat such as Panda Express, or Subway. But I am talking about a hidden place that is popular for many students, faculty and guests. Below the offices of the Viking Union, there is a hidden coffeehouse on the third floor. It is known as the Underground Coffeehouse. This place provides a study place for students and it also provides coffee and comfy couches for students to relax and socialize with their friends. But the Underground is not only a place for socializing. In front of the comfy couches there is a small stage for live entertainment. Students can come in the evening to see bands and comedians perform. As a freshman who has only been to the Underground Coffeehouse a few times, it was hard trying to find the place. But right as I stepped out of the elevator, I could smell the strong aroma of espresso. As I enter, I get my first taste of the Underground.

As I walk inside, I am greeted by the warm hospitality of the employees. Just by their politeness you can tell that they genuinely care for their customers. Their menu consists of homemade soups, specialty sandwiches, bakery items, coffee and espresso. No matter what time of day it is there will always be at least one or two students sitting on a couch with their laptop. I remember my first visit to the Underground, I was surprised to see two students sleeping on the couches! They were sound asleep not bothered by the background music, the espresso machine, or even the customers. It is no surprise that the Underground Coffeehouse attracts so many students, faculty and guests. But what about the appearance of the place?

The Underground Coffeehouse has an antique vibe. Looking around, the sofas that are outdated and vintage looking gives it the antique feel, which works well for this environment. The crooked lamps, the old-fashioned coffee tables, the traditional clock with the mirror below it makes it look like you are in your grandparent’s house. The stage is put perfectly in the center for all to see. The maroon color wall paint goes well with the vintage look. However, this vintage inspired coffeehouse may not appeal to some students or visitors who come here. They might not be fond of the ragged sofas or the crooked lamps that look old-fashioned. The carpet looks very old with awkward shapes such as triangles and circles. I think that the carpet would fit better at an arcade center than the Underground. It does not look appealing for a coffee shop. But what stood out to me was the Spanish mural that is painted beside the stage. It is a beautiful piece of art that people do not expect to see at the Underground Coffeehouse.

The atmosphere in the Underground Coffeehouse is calm, and studious. It is unlike Zoe’s where it is mostly used as a study break to hang out with friends whereas the Underground, students would usually study inside. You would figure that Zoe’s should have a similar ambience of the Underground Coffeehouse because it is located inside the library. That is what makes the Underground Coffeehouse unique. No matter what time of day you come here, it will always have that relaxed, tranquil atmosphere. There will be times where it would get a little noisy, but after a few minutes it would die down and all you would hear is the espresso machine and the sound of students typing on their keyboard. The music that is played here is just right for the atmosphere in this place. From time to time, you’ll hear some Beatles to other bands and artists. If there was no music played, then the Underground Coffeehouse would be too quiet. On the opposite side of the stage, there is a part of the coffeehouse that has a beautiful view of the city of Bellingham and the Puget Sound. Whenever I walk inside the Underground, the view is the first thing I see. I see the mountains and the bay right outside the windows.

There is no doubt that the Underground Coffeehouse attracts a lot of visitors. But some might say the appearance of this coffeehouse might not be appealing to others. But it will always have the satisfactory and the friendly customer service. I encourage everyone to visit!
