Family class immigration is the second largest category under Canada’s Immigration Level Plan. In 2023, Canada hopes to welcome 106,500 newcomers under the family class category, with 78,000 under the spouses, partners, and children category and 28,500 under the parents and grandparents category. By 2025, Canada aims to welcome 118,000 newcomers through family-class immigration.

Family class sponsorship allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor a person to join them in Canada and become a permanent resident.

To Be Eligible As A Sponsor, The Sponsor Must:

Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;

Permanent Resident of Canada;

A person who is registered under Canadian Indian Act;

Should be 18 years of age or older;

Not be in prison, bankrupt, under a removal order, or charged with a serious offense;

Not have been sponsored as a spouse within the last 5 years.

Spouses, common law and conjugal partners, children, parents, and grandparents may all be sponsored, provided they meet the required eligibility criteria.

The Benefits Of Canada Family Sponsorship Programs:

The family members who are sponsored under the sponsorship program category are not required to clear any points cut-offs to be eligible.

The Family members who get a Permanent Resident Visa through a family sponsorship program have the right to live, work or study in Canada.

Access to government-funded healthcare, free education till 18 years of age, Canada Pension Plan benefits, old age security, and Guaranteed Income Supplement.

  • Parents living in Canada on a dependent visa as permanent residents can apply for Canadian citizenship after three years.

The Persons Eligible For Family Sponsorship Program:

spouse (with some restrictions)

common-law partner (with some restrictions)

conjugal partner (with some restrictions)

dependent children

parents — (with some additional conditions)

grandparents — (with additional conditions)

brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, orphaned granddaughters or grandsons, under the age of 18 and not married or living in a common-law relationship

another parent of any age or relationship, but only under specific conditions

accompanying parents of the above-mentioned persons (e.g., spouse, partner, and dependent children).

To Be A Sponsor, The Canadian Citizen Or Permanent Resident Must:

sign a sponsorship agreement with the relative to be sponsored that commits the sponsor to provide financial support for the relative, if necessary. This agreement also says the person becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support him or herself;

provide financial support for a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner for three years from the date they become a permanent resident, and;

provide financial support for a dependent child for 10 years, or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first.
