Dear EMP Community,
EMP(Every Media blockchain Platform) is a fair ecosystem in which content producers, users, advertisers, developers and service operators all receive fair rewards depending on activity values.

The current BAADD media ecosystem has caused many social problems. Today, we will briefly discuss problems of media market that EMP is trying to solve.

What is BAADD media?
It means huge portals or social media that are defined by the Economist as Big, Anti-competitive, Addictive, and Destructive to Democracy.

Exclusive Distribution and Economic Inequality

In the current media business, content provided by portals and social media is free. And advertisers prefer BAADD companies with much more members than traditional media, and companies like traditional media companies, especially paper newspapers, have difficulties in self-sufficiency through advertising and subscription fees.

Let’s take a look at the relations between excessive monopoly profits of BAADD Media and media companies. In an interview with Ahn Min-ho, professor of media at Sookmyung Women’s University in 2017, Naver reported that the total amount of Naver’s total news subscription fee was estimated at 306 billion Won, It is said that it has been awarded news subscription fee about 70 billion Won annually by signing a contract. According to this material, Naver enjoys over 200 billion Won in excess monopoly profits annually.

This uneven distribution of profit is not just a matter for the press. The value of content and information uploaded to blogs, social networking sites, etc. can not be returned to contents producers.

Biased Information Delivery and Abuse by Few Organizations

In Korea, Naver’s search neutrality, which has a 74% share of the portal service, is controversial issue.

Some organizations attempted to manipulate ‘Like’ and comments by using a macro program, and it was suspected that Naver was editing the first screen according to ‘external pressure by some organizations’ or ‘profit of a certain group’. In addition, it is controversial that Naver sticks to the commercial purpose of ‘staying longer’ by sticking to the in-link method of preventing moving to a news media site after searching.

Personal Information Extraction

Verizon, who took over Yahoo’s Internet business in October 2017, said that 3 billion user accounts was hacked by the hacking damage that occurred in August 2013.

Yahoo’s tumblr and Flickr were also included, and Oracle’s payment subsidiary, Micros, was also hacked on user information. In 2012, Linkedin said 6.5 million user passwords has been leaked.

As personal data is centralized, these companies, which store a lot of customer information, become a good prey like a ‘honey pot’ to hackers. Information once leaked is irreversible and is being exploited for crimes such as voice phishing.

Infringement of Personal Information

While using Facebook and other so-called BAADD media, we often think that the fee is free. On the face of it, though, Facebook sells personal propensity information through a psychological testing app, and makes profits by targeting ads to companies and organizations based on such propensity information. The personal information we provide is used to make sure the business works well.

Most of the BAADD media, including Facebook, actively use this personal information for advertising purposes. However, most users will be providing all the information without knowing exactly what they agreed to.

Digital Addiction

Many social media hire psychologists and data scientists to try out psychological experiments to see how users feel about specific content or ads and to maximize the effectiveness of their ads by exposing them to personalized, customized ads. They continue to devise and apply technical tricks that allow them to stay in the media for longer by taking advantage of addictive design and lures to attract clicks, and users become unknowingly digital addicts.

How can we solve these problems?
