What are drones? 10 useful facts that will make you a drone expert.

Have you ever wondered what drones are and why they’re so popular?

In this post we’ll go over what drones are, what they do, and how you can learn more about them.

What are Drones?

Drones are basically flying robots.

They can either be remote controlled or they can fly autonomously (without the help of anyone). Drones can be big or small, fast or slow, and people use them around the world for all types of amazing things.

Drones also go by a few other names.

  • UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle)
  • Multicoptor
  • Multirotor
  • …and a few other names.
The most exciting way to learn about what drones are is by hearing all the cool things that they can do.

In this post, we’ll go over everything from drones that clean our oceans to drones that might take over the world.

So without further adieu, let’s dive into the 10 reasons you should care about drones.

10) Drones Can Take Beautiful Pictures

Drones help us see the world from a whole new perspective. People are taking gorgeous photos of islands, forests, and waterfalls around the world.

You can spend hours scrolling through social media looking through mesmerizing drone aerial images.

9) Drones are no match for birds of prey

Hawks are intense and not even weaponized sky robots have made it off their snack list. Unsuspecting drones around the world are getting swooped down by birds of prey.

Recently, security teams have been using this to their advantage.

Police are starting to train hawks to take down drones, and so far they seem up for the challenge.

8) Zero to 2 Miles High in 3 Minutes!

There’s a lot of rules and regulations around flying your drone — but some people think rules are meant to be broken.

You’re only allowed to fly drones a few hundred feet in the air, but one hobbyist decided to test the limits.

3 and a half minutes later their drone was looking down on the clouds from 2 miles above the ground. Afterwards, they raced back to the ground and made it with only 4% battery life to spare.

That’s pretty amazing — but it’s also illegal. Don’t try this at home but if you’d like to see the video they took you’ll find that here at Popular Mechanics.

7) Flying Near Airports Can Cause Total Mayhem

We’ve all had nightmares about the security at airports. Even the smallest thing can sometimes cause chaos, and drones are a great example of that.

Recently, an Air traffic monitor put out footage of exactly what happens if you fly too close to the airport.

The video is of the Gatwick Airport in London, where the drone delayed flight patterns for hours! The NATS put this footage out to remind us all to fly safely and stay out of restricted airspace.

On the bright side of all this is some great footage put together that we can all see here at Metro UK.

6) Drones Can Spark Your Cool New Business Adventure

Entrepreneurs rejoice, drones are also great for business! There’s a whole new era of innovation coming, and drones are leading the way.

Here’s a short list of ideas you could use to kick start your own drone business.
  • Wedding and special events video and photography
  • Inspect power lines, roofing, or any other hard to reach places
  • Rent or lease drones to people who need them
  • Collect data for farms to help grow crops more efficiently
  • Create a drone delivery service to ship goods
Starting a drone business can be a difficult but exciting opportunity.

5) Drones Might Take Over The World Someday

Since the beginning of time people have tried to predict how the world might end. There are many doomsday prophecies about technology, and drones play a part in some them.

Governments launching drone attacks and 24/7 airborne surveillance can get scary fast!

The mix of AI, drones, and weapons might be that special mix that causes the robot apocalypse. We’re not too worried yet, but it’s interesting to think of a time where we might be rules by our new drone overlords.

4) Drones Can Help Save Lives

Any real superpower can be used for both good or evil. For all the bad reputation drones get they’re also doing incredible things to help save the lives.

Drones are becoming helpful tools in many fields

For example…

  • Search and rescue missions
  • Helping in police pursuits
  • Ambulances or fire extinguishers.
  • Disaster relief for food, water, and supply shipments to remote areas.

It will be exciting to see how drones continue to develop their superpowers for good in the future.

This post in Police One has more details on how drones are helping save lives around the world.

3) Drones Can Clean Our Oceans

The ocean is home to beautiful wildlife, complex ecosystems, and TRASH — lots and lots of trash…like an unreasonable amount of trash.

Here’s some important facts about waste in our oceans…

“There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. “

Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea”

So what do we do about it?

Enter the Waste Shark!

This big ocean Roomba has some real hustle in it, and could be the answer to cleaning our oceans. It’s about the size of a car with a small mouth that reaches below the water. Waste Sharks run around tirelessly for 24 hours a day in full pursuit of a cleaner ocean, and we love them for it.

Check out Watersharks.com for a deep dive into the world of cleaner oceans.

2) We Love Drones in All Their Shapes and Sizes

There are sizes from tiny handheld drones all the way up to enormous elephant sized drones. Some fly like helicopters, some like planes, and some have their own unique style. There are also drones with 4, 6, 8, and 10 propellers.

Every drone is unique, and we love them all the same.

Each has their own set of skills, and we’ll learn more about them in future posts.

Check out 3D Insider for more information.

1) There is a TON More to Learn About These Ideas

There’s so much going on with drones right now that it’s hard to keep up! We went through a lot of big topics without going into a lot of details, and there’s still even more to cover.

We’ll continue to create blogs, lessons, news, and updates to send out so you always up to date on the drone world.
