Bigotry
College Honors Program Essay
Are you a part of a club or committee? Have you ever had a complete discussion where everyone is proposing different ideas? There are always a few people that never agree with anyone. It’s their way or the highway.
In Thomas Jefferson’s quote, he is referring to these people. Jefferson is trying to say that anyone who is prejudice towards another group or not welcome to new ideas is naïve. Their lack of pure education causes them to judge others. They base their opinions on the biased information they hear. Thomas Jefferson also says these people believe they are above all and are even being told from God(s) that they are right. These types of people will lead us to the death of our country. Therefore, people need to be taught in an impartial way by their teachers and parents. They should also be taught according to the writings of the forefathers: “All men are created equal.”
If everyone was taught this way, there would be no room for prejudices. Thomas Jefferson meant for people to be open to anything and everything. Sometimes change is needed. An educated and open-minded person will be up for change. Free discussion paves the path towards decision; decisions on bills and laws. These people will put every opinion into perspective and decide on the most beneficial plan. This is what the country needs right now.
Currently, Congress is getting nowhere. They will propose a bill and then see it slammed down. It is practically filled with a bunch of opinionated politicians who are not willing to agree with anyone of the opposing side. People need to stop thinking about what will benefit them and look at what will benefit the country. In times like these (with the deficit), people need to shape up and realize we don’t have the money for all their elaborate schemes. We need to stop spending money on little things and look at the big picture.
I have been in these situations—when people don’t want change. They take every reason and fault they can to prove that their way is the right way. They ramble on about nothing and about things that don’t even matter. People need to be mellower and open to new ideas. They need to realize that they are not the only person on Earth and that the areas they are worried about do not matter in the whole outlook of life.
If Jefferson were here right now and could see what our country has become, he would definitely be referring to his previous quote.
