Strong article. I have bad news for you: many contemporary young writers can’t write narrative — especially those coming out of MFA writing programs, most of which have their own aesthetic. I suspect you are right about the preponderance of social media in young creative peoples’ lives, but we may also be experiencing the aftermath of children being praised for everything they do. I’m guilty for some of that. I was a counselor and educator in the Seventies and Eighties and too often, the focus on self esteem (ironic in the case of kids from entitled upper-middle class families) won out over developing one’s craft.
