Choosing to choose
I’m fascinated by human behaviour, social behaviour and cultures. I spend a fair share of my time observing people, and sometimes too fair share of my time, reflecting on what I’ve observed.
One of the things puzzles me the most is human decision making. And the lack of it.
I’ve come to realise, that very few people choose to decide. Decisions are all around us, we make them on a daily basis. Every minute, every second we have the choice to do, see, say, look, eat, read, think, something. And we become the sum of all of those decisions, it shapes our future selves.
Deciding is risky
It then seems like a lot of pressure to decide everything you do, specially if it’s going to define your future. What most people do is take the “safe” choice: not choosing at all.
Both choices seem dreadful. The choice of choosing to do something is risky. The choice of choosing to do nothing is risky.
In reality, choosing nothing is like watching your life as a movie, where you were supposed to be the director, but instead, you decided to quietly sit back as an spectator.
I can confidently tell you, the moment I started developing awareness about choices, my life changed. I started reprogramming my brain, modifying my behaviours, and designing my future.
I’m not a celebrity, I’m not a movie star, I’m not a motivational speaker, I’m like you. I’ve got the freedom of choice.
I hope my words help you remember you have the freedom to choose too.
