Is the meaning of the term “EMPLOYABILITY” as same as it meant five years ago? It’s a clear NO. This can rightly be owed to the tremendous changes, challenges and advancement in technology which have completely changed the mindset, requirement and need of the volatile business environment.
Employability today is not just a term used to secure a job with a good annual package with perks and incentives by scoring a good CGPA. Being employable in this era means that the individual has some capability or actually much more that what is expected by the corporate world. If the individual is said to be employable it clearly denotes that the candidate possess skill-sets which would serve an asset to the organization.
The approach of the organization to the term employability or being employable depends upon the unique skill-sets the individual should possess. Gone are the days where only merit, communication and teamwork where the criteria the employers used to look for. As the businesses these days are facing challenges from every side be it technology, drastic changes in the preferences of the market etc. The corporate is looking forward to the individuals who have the ability to respond to change, something from the external stimuli in a speedy yet effective manner.
Today only the right person at the right place at the right time is not serving the purpose. Technology advances in a blink of eye, Innovation is faster and frequent. So the approach to the term EMPLOYABILITY had to change for the organization to be successful.
Employers today are looking for the people with agile mindsets which would build agile management which would directly result in having an agile organization. To be employable it is not a card which cannot be turned if you approach in a way it has to be approached. Individuals instead of focusing on the ways to get employed, if work on the ability which the organizations are looking for, the skill-set searched, being able to figure out the need of the organization will result in being able to make a differentiation from the rest.
There are certain situations where the employee inspite of possessing everything is not employed by the employer, this does not mean he/she is not employable. It means that there might be a mismatch in terms of the need of the organization and the skills the individual possess.
Being employable is not a skill it is an attitude one should posses which includes all the qualities required to make a difference from the rest and serve as an asset to the organization.
STAY AGILE……………………………STAY RELEVANT.
