Adjectives are used to describe other words and superlative adjectives are some words that have the most of a particular quality in the group. There are two types of adjectives that are applied to compare two or more nouns. When the comparison is made between the two nouns, then comparative adjectives are used. On the other hand, when the comparison is done among the group, then superlative adjectives are employed.

Some superlative adjectives and their rules:

• ‘Est’ is used after the one syllable word that ends with ‘e’
Example: Wide- Widest
The Brahmaputra river is the widest river in Asia.

Superlative adjectives

• ‘Est’ is added at the end of the words with one consonant and one vowel. In this case, the last consonant is used for two times and ‘est ‘ is added at the end to make it superlative.
Example: Tall- Tallest
Imperial Tower 1 is the tallest tower in the Mumbai city.

• ‘Est’ is added at the end of the one syllable words with more than one vowel or consonant.
Example: High — Highest
He got the highest score in Math in the 10th board exam.

• ‘Est’ is added with the two syllable words that end with ‘y’. In this case, ‘y’ becomes ‘i’ before adding the est.
Example: Happy-Happiest
Roma is the happiest person after getting the news of her daughter’s success in the 12th board exam.

• Two syllable words that do not end with y, can add ‘the most’ to refer to the superlative form.
Example: Beautiful- the most beautiful
Maldives has the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen.
