I would also like to point out that this obsession breaks on a color line, as does the perception of Americans abroad. Black Americans don’t have those obsessive feelings about the American military or the flag/anthem, etc.

Because we are citizens who have suffered under it all. I hate when people lump me with mainstream (White) America. Not because I dislike white people, but because it points out that everyone, regardless of where you are in this world, primarily only see the whiteness of America.

This is such a great article and I can assure you that there is a contingent of Americans here that feel more like you than the rabidly patriotic American caricature these folks represent.
