For the first exercise, we were instructed to outline four different fonts to get a feel for the differences between typefaces.

The second exercise was geared toward typographic voice. We had to choose one word from a list and try different typefaces with that word. I choose “rebellion.” These are my five different fonts I used on “rebellion.”

The top left is Nueva Std Bold font. I think this typeface works okay, but it is not the best. It feels a little calligraphic and playful with the roundness of some letter forms.

The top middle is Trattatello Regular. This font feels more old fashion like writings from a war with a quill and ink. The blotchy-ness and the varied stroke weight adds to the effect of a quill and ink. I think this typeface works to reinforce the meaning of the word but it doesn’t have so much force/action behind it.

The top left is Alana Bold. This feels more feminine with the more cursive letter forms, which I believe makes the meaning of the word not quite as strong.

The bottom left is Trajan Pro 3 Bold. I think this typeface reinforces the meaning of the word best. The all caps definitely helps with the emphasis and strength of the word. The thickness of the letter forms also helps convey “rebellion” and defiance.

The bottom right is Tahoma Regular. This is a sans serif typeface which feels clean and simple. I don’t believe that this is a very good typeface for a word that has action, strength, and defiance behind the meaning. It has a more modern feel to it.

The third exercise was playing with horizontal shifts, type weight, size, and line spacing in body copy. We had seven different rounds with different restraints/instructions.
