A Winter Lament

Lost friendships can be as painful as lost love.
“If only” fixes nothing, especially when it’s done

And in your heart you know
That you were the one
Who shattered the glass
Who broke the mirror
Who crushed the rose
Who smashed and fractured and blasted it all
By a species of madness you couldn’t control
Because inside your soul is a swirl of winds even you don’t understand.

So you drink bad whisky and pinch back the clock
And peek through the fog
Imagining footsteps. But when you turn no one is there.

The forces of nature no longer nurture the creature you’ve become.
“If only” fixes nothing when everything is gone.
