How does caffeine work? — Video of the week.

Inspired by Fred Wilson, I will be posting my very own video of the week. It can be educational, inspiring, funny or simply share-worthy.

So, for this week, the video I found very interesting was TED Talks’s “How does caffeine keep us awake? “ by Hanan Qasim.

It’s well known that caffeine “wakes you up”, but the actual science behind it is quite interesting.

What this video motivates me to is to reinforce the habit of taking “breaks” from caffeine. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors (what helps you feel sleepy), which then keeps us awake (and excited) with coffee. If you take breaks, adenosine receptors will disappear and your body can readjust. That break will, at least, make coffee taste better and make you feel more energized, rather than just crave it for the sake of starting the day.
