Acton comes from a long line of businessmen & women. His grandmother had started a golf club in Michigan; his mother founded a freight-forwarding business in 1985, teaching him to take the responsibilities of a business owner extremely seriously.

In January 2009, Koum bought an iPhone and realized that the then seven-month-old App Store was about to spawn a whole new industry of apps.

He visited his friend Alex Fishman and talked about developing an app. Koum almost immediately chose the name WhatsApp because it sounded like “what’s up”, and a week later on his birthday, Feb. 24, 2009, he incorporated WhatsApp Inc. in California.

Brian Acton Success Story

Brian Acton is known as an ethical business person as he left $850 Million behind from the deal of Whatsapp — Facebook that he found along with Jan Koum.

Acton rejected the proposal by Facebook to run targeted ads on Whatsapp to their users post-Facebook buy off of WhatsApp. Due to these differences, he had to leave part of his shares that were promised to him by Facebook during the acquisition of Whatsapp. Acton and his wife Tegan Acton started Sunlight Giving in 2014. Sunlight Giving is a family foundation dedicated to supporting the basic services of low-income families with young children ages 0–5.
