Introducing: Immersive Stories 2018
On the 23rd and 24th of September, Screen Training Ireland, in collaboration with the Audi Dublin International Film Festival (ADIFF) and Audi Ireland, hosted an Immersive Content Creation and Hackathon event at RHA Gallery and IMRO.
The winner of the hackathon competition was Pink Kong Studios’ concept, The Tundra, with creative director Aoife Doyle, producer Niamh Herrity and writer Denis James Ryan, receiving a €30,000 bursary to produce the beautiful and touching virtual reality experience. I’d like to extend my congratulations to Pink Kong Studios for their winning pitch and thank the other participants for competing in what was an inspiring event. In addition to the generous bursary to help execute their concept, Pink Kong Studios will exhibit The Tundra at the inaugural Immersive Stories: Conference and Exhibition at ADIFF 2018. I have the fortune to curate the conference and exhibition and I wanted to share some of the exciting plans we have in store for the February event.
Stories today are being told across many platforms: mobile, television, cinema, virtual reality, mixed reality and theme parks. Given the abundance of high quality and accessible mediums, we now have the means to engage audiences in both passive and participatory ways. As University of Southern California Professor Henry Jenkins observes, “there is no dead media”. At Immersive Stories: Conference, we have invited speakers who will tell stories across multiple platforms with backgrounds that span three distinct areas: fictional story-worlds, news and documentary and music and sound. The speakers will provide insight into their work and how they leverage these platforms to their full potential. We look forward to announcing the first wave of speakers at the end of November.
The Immersive Stories: Exhibition will provide a hands-on opportunity for attendees to participate in the best multi-platform and immersive entertainment. The exhibition is a critical component to Immersive Stories; we hope to provide attendees with the opportunity to not only experience storytelling on these emerging new immersive platforms, but also demonstrate how consuming entertainment through these mediums can fit into their daily lives.
I think this is a fascinating time to be authoring creative content and it has been an honor for me to curate this event. I’d like to thank Gráinne Humphreys, Sarah Sharkey and Sarah Ahern of ADIFF; Sorcha Loughnane of Screen Training Ireland; and Richard Molloy of Audi Ireland for fully supporting this new and progressive stream at ADIFF 2018.
