Applying human-centered design to emerging technologies

It would be interesting to examine the ethical implications of these new technologies. Designing ambiguous, emerging technologies to fit users’ wants can create negative externalities that should also be taken into account. I imagine designers at Instagram feel they are building what their users desire but I can’t imagine myself having wished for the feeling of social exclusion at a lack of likes or a nagging feeling of needing to check a feed in order to compare superficial aspects of my lifestyle. How do we remain conscious of these things in the design process?
