With a plethora of options, choosing a neighborhood to call your own in New York City can be as overwhelming as navigating the city’s transit system. Each distinct neighborhoods offers something different to its residents, so the challenge is finding the place to best fit your personal preferences. Here are five of New York City’s trendiest neighborhoods:

GREENWICH VILLAGE: Home to New York University, this neighborhood is known for its progressive movements and inclusive nature. The LGBT movement in New York got its start in Greenwich Village and has been a defining characteristic of the neighborhood since. While the population has grown over the last decade, the area still retains its small-town charm and community spirit.

SOHO: Taking the trendy lead for the last few years is SoHo. Nestled just south of Houston Street in Lower Manhattan, the neighborhood has a distinct artsy vibe with its vast offerings of art galleries and artists’ lofts. Residents are drawn to relocate to the area in large part because of SoHo’s upscale shopping opportunities and eclectic dining choices.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT: What was once primarily a commercial district housing the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the World Trade Center, is now a booming residential area. Also known as FiDi, the area sits at the southern tip of Manhattan island, offering sweeping views of the water and the Statue of Liberty.

TRIBECA: Tribeca gets its name for its location at the “triangle below Canal Street” and boasts easy access to all of Lower Manhattan. As the area has become increasingly gentrified, it has become a mecca for young families looking for a safe place to raise children. A wide variety of upscale residential offerings solidify Tribeca as one of the trendiest neighborhoods in the Big Apple.

HELL’S KITCHEN: If you are looking for the glitz and glamour of the best of city living, this is the neighborhood for you. Also known as Midtown West, Hell’s Kitchen is close to the city’s Broadway theater scene and most well-known tourist areas. Because of its central location, the neighborhood is accessible to many of the city’s commercial districts. A burgeoning nightlife scene attracts residents looking to make the most of their city living experience.
