The reason they showed Mantis saying ‘he mourns’ wasn’t so the audience would have sympathy for Thanos, but so Nebula and Quill could click on that Gamora was dead which helped move the plot forward (because as a result, Quill broke the trance that Mantis had over Thanos). Also, it wouldn’t have been a worthy sacrifice if he didn’t feel pain at the loss of Gamora, regardless of whether or not he’s an abuser: The only reason he got the soul stone is *because* he loved her, no matter how twisted that love (and every single audience member, even my 6 year old daughter, can see that it’s an unhealthy and destructive love). But yeah, they weren’t trying to make us feel bad for him over the fact that he killed Gamora. The writers just needed Nebula to come to the realization that Gamora was dead, and inform Quill of the fact, so Quill would attack Thanos. That’s all.
