I was searching for kindness, humor, and authenticity.
One day, I stumbled upon Day9 (Sean Plott).
I found Sean because I was overwhelmingly frustrated with StarCraft II and desperately needed help. I’d never played an RTS game competitively before, and every player I encountered was wiping the floor with me. I knew nothing of micro or macro and didn’t understand managing my supplies. StarCraft II was already a brutal game, and without help, I would surely drown. I needed a guide to light the way through this hellish landscape, and Day9 was precisely who I needed.
Little did I know, I would be receiving more than an education on StarCraft II.
I remember the excitement I used to get every time I hit “Find Match” on an StarCraft II ladder. I remember feeling that every game was critical. Sean guided me every step of the way.
What drew me in and kept my attention?
My one complaint about streamers and YouTube personalities is that many cannot keep my attention. With my limited time for relaxation, the content I am choosing to consume must have value.
Sean’s humor and honesty drew me in at first. For those who haven’t tried, getting in front of a camera and maintaining a level of authenticity can be quite tricky. Sean kept it with his honesty and knowledge.
This gamer, competitor, creator, and personality found his niche in something I didn’t quite understand at the time. Sean was a master at teaching. The way he fundamentally broke down games into manageable chunks for us to digest kept me coming back night after night to indulge in his VODs.
Back in my StarCraft II days, I would regularly tune in to Sean’s show, “The Day9 Daily”, with pen and paper in hand. His in-depth analysis brought hours and hours of value to those intermediate to high-level players while also teaching beginners the fundamentals.
Who else could have hammered the idea of “Probes and Pylons” so deeply into my brain? There was a more profound lesson hidden in plain sight. While I laugh at “Probes and Pylons” now, the more in-depth study focused on the fundamentals.
Every once in a while, you encounter someone in the zone with what they are working on, that their work becomes an extension of them—Sean’s zone was his gentle and yet detail-oriented shows that oozed with every ounce of competitive knowledge.
Through the years, Sean has done a teaching series on Dota 2, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, and many others, but he taught me something much more profound than playing video games. He taught me about life.

To watch someone so passionate about their interests gave me a form of permission to pursue my hobbies. I watched as Sean detailed step by step how he evolved through the years, and I felt moved by his sincerity.
I learned more about myself from Sean’s talks and recommendations than from any other form of media. Sean was teaching gamers before gaming blew up.
I have since slowed down on StarCraft II but I still tune-in consistently to watch Day9. I feel a sense of loyalty since his contribution to my development was so impactful.
My successes built over time. Success in StarCraft II led to success at work. My accomplishments at work led to increased confidence. As my confidence grew, so did my number of friendships. All of this led to healthy risk-taking, and my risks have led me here.
All of this because someone was kind enough to encourage invisible people who sat behind random computer screens around the world listening to his words. His ability to teach without arrogance and with a deep desire to be helpful has not only changed my life but the lives of so many friends who have come across his content.
