Clash Royale tips for Arena 3

Even though I previously posted that it made me sad that you need to pay in Clash Royale to climb really high, I will still try to see how far can I get using my brain.

I won’t specifically talk about which cards are bad/good because writing that is boring and won’t teach anything.

These tips are ordered from most important to less.

Arena 1 & 2

These arenas didn’t matter to me. I just spammed whatever units I had (with some strategy), but I didn’t really get to learn anything until I reached Arena 3.

Arena 3

As soon as you step into arena 3 you realize this isn’t going to be easy.
I learnt these while I was here:

Combat tips

  • Gaining elixir advantage: this is the core of the game, the way to win (or gain to win I’d say). The idea is that you should spend less elixir than your opponent. So don’t just spam cards at the opponent. You need to create this advantage. And how do you create it? By…
  • Countering single cards separately. There will be cards in this arena that will straight murder your towers (Prince), or create huge enemy snowballs (Witch). It is your duty to find out how to counter these cards, preferably with cheaper cards. If you beat a 5 card with a 4 card, you have now 1 elixir more than the opponent.
  • Countering groups of cards. This WILL take time, because there are many combinations and you have to get your ass kicked so many times before you learn. For example:
Deploy a resistant melee unit in the back (like the Knight) to kill ranged units (like the Musketeer, or the Witch). MAKE SURE to deploy other units if there are more enemy units so while he soaks damage, you use the distraction to cause damage. This means you need to be quick with your fingers so that when you do stuff like this the units end up getting ready CLOSER TIMEWISE.
Deploy an area damage unit, like the Bomber or Dragon to kill weak swarms.
    Kite (explained below)
  • Use elixir like it’s a precious thing. Don’t spam cards.
When you are on attack mode, you should spend enough elixir so that you create snowballs. You don’t want to throw 6 easily killed minions at the enemy. You want to create a snowball with something resistant at the front, and hitters at the back.
But when you are on defend mode, you should spend the same or less to counter enemy units. And every time your enemy deploys a unit while attacking you, you should also deploy another unit (to counter them).
And this is VITAL, you switch from defend to attack ONLY when you have elixir-effectively countered an enemy attack (or maybe when you want to surprise push a different lane, not recommended for newbies)
  • Don’t always spam the same side of the map. Switching lanes can give you an advantage because sometimes the enemy has spent too much elixir on one lane, and they don’t have the elixir to defend from the quick attack you just unleashed on the other lane.
  • Usually wait for the elixir bar to fill up.
  • Never let the bar get stuck on 10 (even though I told you to fill the bar), because you’re not generating new elixir, and you want to put units on the map before reaching 10, because the elixir is not spent immediately when you do that.
This is special at the beginning of the round. You need to lay one card at either corner of the screen. Try to find out which is the best to do this.
  • Kiting is hard but helps a lot. Kite on your side of the map to make enemy units get aggro from towers. For example: if you’re against a single strong enemy unit, you can deploy a cheap card behind it so that you make their travel-to-your-tower distance longer. Bear in mind, if you deploy it too far, the enemy unit won’t target it (no kite), if you deploy it too close your deployed unit will take damage before it’s even ready (bad kite).
You also have to deploy before the enemy unit locks onto your tower.
Did I mention kiting is hard and takes time to learn?
  • Don’t freeze/choke if you don’t have the card you need. Just put the cheaper/one that makes more sense in a corner to cycle the deck.
  • If you have the chance to fireball 2 buildings at once, do it. If they are unit deploying buildings, try to time the fireball to kill next deployed unit.

Deck tips

  • Use the deck that counters the most common decks. Let’s say, on Arena 3, you have a deck that doesn’t deal effectively against X-Bow (let’s be honest, there’s not a lot of ways to deal with it at that point). But you only run into an X-bow every 20 matches. It’s not worth changing your deck.
  • Try to figure or remember from matches which are the cards that end up being the most useful to you and if they outweigh their elixir cost. Keep those cards on your deck.
  • Level up ONLY the cards you will be using. No need to waste precious gold on cards you’re not using. Level difference matters big time.
