Why Play Golf in the Algarve?

When looking for a place to take that next, well-earned golfing holiday, there can be few better places to book than the Algarve.

Located on the south coast of Portugal, the Algarve offers one of the most stable climates, in not just Europe but the world. During the summer months, temperatures can reach as high as 30 degrees but with pleasant breezes along the coast, the weather is still comfortable enough to enjoy a great round of golf. The weather is very mild throughout the year but perhaps the best time to visit the Algarve for a golf holiday, is either the spring or autumn. During this time of year, the temperature sits between 17 and 19 degrees, perfect for getting on the course and concentrating solely on the round of golf, as opposed to worrying about what the weather is doing. There is plenty of sunshine to enjoy during the winter months too, with temperatures as high as 15 degrees, making the Algarve a year-round golf destination.

Other Attractions

However, it’s no good having a nice climate, if the golf courses are not worth travelling for. The good news is, the Algarve not only has some fantastic golf courses, but there is also plenty to choose from in the region including many blue flag beaches that are highly rated, water sports, national parks and picturesque towns and villages. In 2012, the New York Times named the Algarve as the best destination for golf in Europe and it has continued, to not only uphold but build on that reputation ever since.

Championship Courses

There’s a wide range of top quality championship courses to choose from, designed by some of the great names in golf, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo. The pick of the golf courses in the Algarve, have to be the Oceanico Victoria and Old Course, Quinta do Logo, North and South Courses, Vale do Lobo, Royal & Ocean Courses, San Lorenzo Golf Club and Monte Rei Golf Club. Coupled with the tremendous choice of golf courses, are the resorts and facilities which go alongside them and combine, to make the Algarve perfect for a relaxing golf holiday. There are international hotel names, such as Crowne Plaza and Hilton but also local hotel groups and apartments in which to stay.

In truth, there is such a wide variety of golf courses, resorts and villas in the Algarve, it’s possible to go back again and again and still find somewhere new to stay and play golf. That’s unless you have found a real gem, of which there are many and just can’t help but return to it year after year.

With plenty of flights leaving the UK for Faro every day, there is no reason not give the Algarve a try, as your next golfing holiday destination. It would only be right to warn you however, that once you play golf in the Algarve, you may never go on holiday anywhere else.
