I admire Temin generally, but it doesn’t sound right that the Roman Empire was as prosperous as Europe in 1700. Look at the population figures in Wikipedia. It seems that by even by 1000 Italy and France had populations about as high as in Roman times (Spain, much higher), and populations grew a lot up to the BLack Death around 1350. Medieval technology was better than Roman, too.
