You interpret the Republican unanimity as reflecting their evaluation of the mood of the American people. That is not correct. It reflects their evaluation of the likelihood of being primaried. Any Republican politician who breaks ranks with the party will be defeated in the primaries by a hard-line Republican.

In fact, Republican politicians are facing a horrific conundrum. If they break ranks with Mr. Trump, then they will surely be primaried. But if they DON’T break ranks, then many of them will lose in the general election. Why? Because they know that Mr. Trump is a crook and they know that the evidence against him will pile up higher and higher. One year from today, the evidence will show that he has committed many felonies. The Democrats already have him on violations of campaign finance law, obstruction of justice (ten counts) and feloniously soliciting campaign assistance from not one but two foreign powers. And there are more than two dozen investigations underway! Mr. Trump is the albatross dragging the Republican Party down. At this point, their best hope is that they can reconstruct the party in the aftermath of the Blue Tsunami that is bearing down on them.
