Shortage of aminophylline for injection

ASHP Drug Shortage Bulletin

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of aminophylline for injection. It is a solution of theophylline and ethylenediamine in water, and is used to open airways constricted by asthma. The 1946 photograph below gives you a visual for how long this drug has been used for this purpose.

Inhalers have replaced injections for everyday use, but injectable aminophylline still has a role to play in patient care.
