How might we ensure the safety of a child in a social situation?
My General Ideas
Due to the fact that we had gone through the quick brainstorm thinking in class, it was easier to come up with ideas. I mostly tried thinking of situations where children would either be unsafe due to danger or injury. Wearables were definetly the easiest to come up with, knowing it could be both accessible to the parent and child.
New Warm-Up Game
For my new warm up game I came up with a fun think fasting exercise. The game is best played after a quick word association game. This way once this game is played, the participants are already in a fast thinking mindset. The game is calle “I Hate/Love When” because it forces each person to point to another and say eith something they really hate or really love. The extreme of the hatred or affection can range from anything, but the game really makes them share something about themselves. It follows a similar structure to “Zip, Zap, Zop” where participants point to the others in the group at random at a very fast pace. Another rule about the game is that between each person in the group they had to switch back and forth from “hate” and “love.” This then forces them to listen who is going before them.
For my focus group I used some people I knew that had interesting insights on parenting or child care in general. I used my mother and 2 other mutual friends as well as a friend of a friend. My mother’s good friend was planning on coming but had to cancel last minute. Almost everyone in the group had experience with caring for children on a regular basis.
Jordan, 25 years old, has worked with recreation programs for almost 6 years and was the manager at Lifetime Fitness child care center.
Carol, 62 years old, has four kids and five grandchildren. Also has worked as a social worker for close to 20 years.
David, 24 years old, is a recreation major at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, also has over 5 years of experience in youth recreation.
Tony, 19 years old, doesnt have much connection or experience to child care or children in general. He served as a good set of outside eyes for the entire group.
Sorting & Voting
Once all the brainstorming time was finished, the entire group came together and began sorting the ideas into groups. It was hard for some people at first to remember to be silent, but pretty soon everyone began to adapt and made great categories.

- Wearables and accessories
- Child Entertainment
Once all the sorting was complete, each person in the group got 5 stickers of a different color. One vote would consist of a placed sticker, participants could vote for only one idea of their own.
The ideas I ended up choosing from ranged from reiterations from my personal sketches, popular ideas in the focus groups, and brainstorming ideas done in class. When I re-sketched other peoples ideas i was able to either refine it or draw it how I see it in my mind. Overall there were a lot of unique different ideas across all forms of brainstorming.
