If you’re having trouble with your iPhone, we’ve got some tips to help you out!

Sam D., who has been repairing smartphones for over a decade at eRepairChicago.com, a smartphone repair shop in Chicago IL, wants to pass along some advice on how to get your iPhone fixed.

There’s always a reason why your iPhone is glitching, showing random lines and trying to call or text people you never wanted to contact. Don’t worry, it’s not a ghost trying to get you back with your ex. The most likely reason is that your LCD/OLED, a component is the screen assembly on your phone, is damaged. It could be an obvious crack in the screen, or a tiny crack in the LCD/OLED under the glass, which is sometimes not noticeable to the naked eye. This type of damage is usually caused by either a single drop or dropping your device multiple times over time. To address these issues, there are a few options you can consider:

  1. Apple store repair: You can set an appointment and take your iPhone to an Apple store for repair. Prices for screen replacements without Apple Care coverage vary depending on your iPhone model, but you can expect to pay between $199 and $399. The repair process may take several hours, depending on how busy the store is.

2. Independent repair shop: There are many phone repair shops available, but it’s important to choose one with good reviews and ask about their repair process, including the parts they use and the estimated repair time. Some repair shops may use lower-quality aftermarket parts to maximize profits. There are 3 main types of quality when it comes to iPhone Screens:

· Low-Quality Aftermarket (Low Tier): This screen is not as bright or as responsive as an original Apple screen and customers usually choose this option for a trade-in because of the lower cost.

· Premium Aftermarket (Mid Tier): This screen is in between the low tier and high tier in terms of brightness and color quality, but you shouldn’t have issues in terms of functionality, customers will usually choose this option if they are looking to save money.

· OEM Quality (High Tier) This option is the best quality as it is the closest to the original quality, While it is priced higher than the others, it will still be cheaper to replace at an independent repair shop vs the Apple store.

3. Do-it-yourself method: It is possible to repair your iPhone screen yourself, but it can be difficult and carries some risks. You’ll need to purchase the necessary tools and parts, which can be challenging due to the wide range of sellers and quality of parts available on sites like eBay and Amazon. If you do decide to go this route, make sure to follow a guide carefully and be cautious when handling small parts to avoid causing further damage. Keep in mind that using this method is at your own risk and will void your warranty.

Note: Whether you decide to replace your iPhone screen yourself or at an independent repair shop, it will cause your iPhone to show an unauthorized display message in your settings, even if you replace it with an original screen. While it does not affect functionality, Apple does this to discourage customers from repairing their devices outside of the Apple store. Unfortunately, there is no way to remove the message due to the software restrictions Apple has implemented in iOS.
