Mothers die every day. Our own mother does not. No grief is proportional. When reporters report the death of another reporter in the field their grief lacks proportion because they may have worked with that person or simply relate to how they live. Cultures survive based on a willingness to bond. A civilization responds to challenges based on a sense of common purpose. When that bond and common purpose fails, so does the civilization.
