Day 5

We started with a huddle that will happen every Friday. The huddle is an opportunity to practice our soft skills and reflect on what has happened this week. We practiced condensing what has happened this week into a brief summary — much in the same way you might do in a staff meeting.

After that, we talked about articulating our values and goals and how that is important when looking at potential employers. There were a few worksheets to help us with understanding our values and constructing a personal mission statement. I think all this was really good. As someone whose previous job conflicted with my personal values, these exercises are incredibly valuable.

The week one project kickoff happened next, where we were given some pointers on starting the first week’s project. This project involves mockups of three webpages for a hypothetical website for Bent Creek Ceramics. Given these mockups, we are responsible for writing the HTML and CSS to produce three pages according to specification.

At this point, I’m essentially finished with the basic requirements as well as all of the bonus material. I will most likely tweak things over the weekend, as well as look for opportunities to clean up the files. I will also be updating the README.md file as well to explain how the site was developed and the strategies that I used so that the project can be an effective component of my portfolio.

I’ve deployed the site on Heroku. You can look at my work here. And the code is in my GitHub account here. Keep in mind the site is totally fictional, and does not represent an actual ceramics company. :-)

The end of the day was a small social hour and we had an opportunity to unwind a bit with the completion of our first week.
