Our lives aren’t perfect. Better yet, none of us are perfect no matter how much we portray it to the world. We all desire to pursue our personal dreams whether it’s being a writer, stylist, yoga instructor or just someone who wants to genuinely change the world. It’s easy to imagine the life you want but contributing to that life and making it a reality is the tricky part. One of the main reasons we as people we aren’t living the lives the way we want is because we aren’t allowing ourselves to be the people we desire to be.

1. Take the Correct Steps to Your Success
If you want to be a photographer and don’t know where to start, surround yourself around photographers that creates the same art that you aspire to create. If you want to be inspired in any way, shape or form it starts with surrounding yourself with people that shares the same interests as you. Imagine being around people who lacks energy or motivation to even get up and contribute to their own lives, you don’t think that energy will affect you negatively? The correct steps to success is acknowledging what you do and surrounding yourself with the same people that does everything that you aspire to do. From a personal experience, I realized that I wanted to be more creative and to be creative I had to surround myself with creative people. Once I started doing that, my mind began to open where I could believe and envision the life I wanted for myself and I know if I can do it, you can too.

2. Finding the Motivation to Get Up
Instead of sitting on the couch and allowing your life and time to pass you by, get up and do the things you have been wanting to do. What’s stopping you? I have the answer: You are what’s stopping you. Those goals you set for yourself are collecting dust and the more you wait for “inspiration”, your goals will turn into what you should have done five years ago. Don’t be that person. There is too much talent wasted in this world because people lack the motivation to create the life they want for themselves. Don’t get me wrong, I am no different from most people but there are times I ask myself, “It’s my life, right?” If you are not living for yourself, then your motivation will sink deeper and deeper into your couch as the life you desire is passing you by. Start with one goal whether it’s going to the gym or waking up an hour earlier for personal time to yourself and view it as something you want to do instead of something you must do. What do you want to do?

3. Don’t be Afraid of Failure
Failure is your lesson and worst enemy. We all are afraid of failure including me and the reason why is because we focus on the outcome rather than focusing on doing the work. As an English major, I would begin to write an essay for my class and stop in the middle of writing and think of the end results of my essay. You begin to fear that you’ll fail when you haven’t even begun to do the work. You must fail to know what it feels like because I am sure once you experience failure repeatedly, you wouldn’t want to experience it ever again. That is in the lesson in failure, it should push you to be better. Don’t be that person who is afraid of failing when you haven’t even contributed to your goals and desires yet. You won’t even know if you’ll fail. Take this advice and don’t be afraid, just look at it as a new opportunity that will make you stronger as a person.

4. Work that Confidence
I know it is difficult to have confidence in yourself and your work sometimes but the fact that you thought of wanting a better life for yourself shows the confidence within you. You recognized that you can attain a greater life than what you have by doing what you love. Confidence is a major key to creating the life you desire and being the person you desire to be because if you must believe it before anyone. Your parents, friends, and loved ones can give all the advice in the world but if it doesn’t start within you, it doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks. You must work that confidence that is already within you and pull it out because if you don’t do it, how will you ever live the life you always wanted to live?

5. Do Not Procrastinate
This statement is easier said than done given the fact that most of procrastinate and tend to have a love-hate relationship with it but it is time to give it up! Like step 2 when it comes to motivation, procrastination stunts your growth in many ways that you shouldn’t even allow. We put off our goals for another day and that day turns into weeks and eventually months. Since it is what we allow that affects our lives, we can’t allow procrastination to walk in our lives and stay because the longer it stays, the longer it’ll take you to obtain the life you want to live. Look at procrastination as a jealous friend that doesn’t want you to succeed. Life is too short to be wasting time especially on habits that don’t benefit you so please kick procrastination to curb.

6. Be Aware of Yourself
Self-Awareness is important in all aspects because if you are not aware of yourself and your contribution to the world, you need to check in with yourself. You must be fully aware of what you want and not what others want of you. Stop caring about what other people think. If you want to be a curator in Chicago or a jazz singer in California, you must be aware that it is something you want for you and no one else. Like I stated before, who are you living for? Being self-aware is acknowledging your purpose in the world and by doing that you must allow yourself to believe that you do have a purpose. Be aware that you are more than what you think.

7. Put your Best Foot Forward
When you put your best foot forward, you are acknowledging that you can and will do the work. You have the confidence that you will succeed and if you fail, you will put your best foot forward and try again. You must lift your foot and walk into your dream of being who you are destined to be. Don’t let fear stop you. Be aware that you can do all things with the confidence that is already instilled in you. You must have the motivation to get up and hit the ground running with what you want for yourself. We all need a push into the right direction but if we don’t push ourselves, we’ll never accomplish anything. Think of your desires and write them down and ask yourself: Am I fully allowing myself to fulfill my desires? If you aren’t, put these seven steps into consideration because you must remember, everything you do starts with you.
