How Seniors Can Make The Most Of The Warmer Weather?

I recently told my senior fitness classes in Toronto, that we are in a special period where the weather will be warmer and there won’t be the hazards of snow and ice for the next 6 months. As many of you know, snow and Ice are big hazards for seniors because they can create falls. Now that the weather is warmer, I decided to share a few ways that seniors can make the most of warmer weather.
Taking a stroll early morning or in the afternoon provides an excellent opportunity to soak up some much needed vitamin D which is necessary for bones, brain and muscular function. Moreover, by being outside it not only allows seniors to soak up some sunlight but also provide them with an opportunity to interact with others. According to studies done in psychology, interacting and socializing can vastly improve mood and help with boredom and depression. Moreover, many psychologists suggest that sitting outside for even just twenty minutes or so can help refresh a person and help with blood circulation and thought process. There are many outdoor activities that one can try during summers such as catching a neighborhood game, fishing, taking an afternoon stroll and picnics etc.
Apart from this, seniors who are fond of gardening; warm weathers provide an excellent opportunity for you to work on your garden. You can put in new plants, clean out the shrubs and redo some of your outdoor plant settings to give it all a new look. Some seniors like to stay indoors and there are a number of activities for them to do indoors. For one, you can start a DIY project. Internet now offers multiple tutorials to build things that are not hectic at all and can keep you busy for days plus it can be a lot of fun. You can build bird feeders, fix up some old shelves or simply make toys or trinkets for your grand kids. Moreover, this weather is ideal for some ‘spring cleaning’ however, it is important to keep in mind that you don’t overexert yourself. Remember there is absolutely no rush and you can take it slow. Start with some old wardrobes and cupboards, sort out things that you no longer use and throw them out or give them away to shelters. The main thing is to keep you busy and occupied because boredom can and does lead to anxiety and depression, which is not good for your health.
Finally exercise is always great outside, I know of many seniors who enjoy playing sports like tennis and make the most of this in warmer temperatures. Last summer I taught a senior exercise class outside where we stayed under the shade of a few big trees to keep cool.
Getting older is not a bad thing, so savor the days and let it fill you with peace and happiness.
