Brick by Brick

What you did yesterday is the foundation for what you will do today. What you have done in the past will always lay beneath what you do now and in the future. That can seem like an intimidating realization.
How can I build the bright future I want to have on a foundation of late nights, too much beer and stale donuts?
Good question. Doing so might look like what would happen if the engineers who planned the Brooklyn Bridge had decided to put it right on the bed of the East River. Namely it would have quickly vacated its position as America’s next great feat of engineering. Thankfully for the lovely residents of New York, New York those civil scientists had some forethought and knew that the bridge wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if they couldn’t find a solid foundation.
Surprisingly enough, construction on the bridge started with it literally floating in the river! Two enormous wooden boxes held the two towers as crews constructed the pillars that would support the bridge. As they grew the boxes, called caissons, sank into the river. When the boxes reached the sediment at the bottom divers went down and the caissons to the bed rock. Well, one of them anyway.
How can we take a page from John Augustus Roebling and plan a foundation into our dreams? What solid ground can we add to our lives through the goals and aspirations that we strive for. John didn’t wait around for certainty. He built it right along with his bridge. Where will you build your certainty?
