Rushing Against the Rain. Making Mamaw’s Croquettes. Drawing an Owlbear.

I am worn out. But I get to draw an owlbear, so that’s good. I’ll explain.

I had a brief window to get the lawn mowed. Rain in the forecast and the grass was looking rough. I spent about a half hour doing that first.

The clouds started to roll in by the time I was done.

I had time to haul those massive tree branches down to the patio but they were still too waterlogged to cut so I just strapped them down and got them ready to go when better skies arrive.

I was a bit tired after that.

Today was croquette day. The salmon I ordered arrived. I spent a little more on the better quality, so shop around a little. Don’t just pick a can off the shelf. It will make a difference IMO.

I got my dry ingredients together and beat the crap out of an egg until it was completely mixed with no albumen visible.

I dumped in the egg and just got in there with my hands and mixed it all together.

The recipe calls for the croquettes to be served with grits but I’ve already had grits a few times this week so I made my rice pilaf instead using orzo as the pasta ingredient.

I tried various shapes but there a reason every one does cakes I guess. It fried best.

I topped it with my Buggs Island Hollandaise Sauce. If you aren’t familiar I’m putting it in the book anyway so just wait a few months.

Pilaf close up.

It’s the good stuff. It really is. An easy one to pull off. And a nice difference in texture to crab cakes.

On to the owlbear.

If you didn’t grow up with the distinct privilege of playing Dungeons & Dragons you may not know what that is. Oddly it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a monster that has the head of an owl on a bear’s body.

In the movie it looked like this.

A little more owl than bear in that version.

The design is for an article on a gaming shop’s website. I don’t know which one but I’ve already emailed to see if I can share the artwork here. I’ll let you guys know. But I’m so happy to be getting paid to do something I’ve always wanted to do.

One last thing:

I noticed this week that a couple of folks actually used the donation button and kicked me a few bucks. Sorry not to acknowledge it before. I’m not being cavalier about it, I just assumed no one would do that. I only made the button “just in case” someone might use it. I’m still not going to check it obsessively as the whole point of this is to keep me writing every day, not to make it into a job.

But it was nice to see. Thanks you guys!

Oh, post-post script,

It never rained.
