What do you want to do about it?

Wow. What a dismissive response to a deeply personal and emotional article (thanks for sharing, Micah!). Like, did you even read the article? Micah readily acknowledges that he doesn’t know what ‘to do about it’:

“ I want to say that things’ll be different this time, to have answers, to be hopeful. But I can only see things as they are. And at the moment, I don’t feel so hopeful. I don’t have those answers.”

You appear to be completely unaware that consciousness-raising (e.g. this article) and protesting (e.g. #BLM) are actually extremely effective tools for social change. Here, think of any significant social movement in American history. The Civil Rights movement. The Women’s Rights movement. The Abolition movement. Hell, even the American Revolution. Do you really think those movements happen without protest, or without raising awareness via written and spoken word? Are you sure you want to assert that they’re “useless?”

Do yourself a favor and read up on social movement theory. Until then, the LEAST you could do is listen respectfully and refrain from ridiculing those who actually trying to change things. Oh, and guess what! It turns out that’s all Micah was hoping for:

But if I could, I’d want to thank you for taking the time to read this, for at least trying to understand — because that’s more than can be said for many others.”
