How Being Confident In Your Path Makes A Big Difference
The Daily Grind #69
Yesterday was the annual yard sale and I walked out of it with a good $41. While it’s small it’s pretty significant when you pair it up with the fact everything I sold was no more than $5. Most was hovering around $1–3.
But what was also interesting was I got to speak to one of my customers back when I was a paperboy.
This has been my second interaction with one of my customers and why I’ve been keeping my distance is a whole other story.
But through that conversation I had, I felt myself standing up a bit straighter, talking calmer and with a lot of pride that I changed my path to being a writer.
That’s not to say I didn’t feel like I was before all of this, but I find that with every passing time I tell people I’m a writer I get confident. Mainly because I get a typical response:
“Okay.”
The First Leap
It’s much like the first leap you take into business. You might tell people you’re an entrepreneur or you’re starting a business and you get that dreaded response.
The person kind of looks at you and says that simple word: “Okay.”
But they say it in such a way that it sounds disapproving or that they are questioning your own path but don’t want to call you out. I might be digging too much into that response but I always feel that’s the case in certain situations.
Some people don’t really believe you can take that first leap.
But I managed to and talked a little about it with this customer I used to deliver papers to so long ago. He sounded more impressed and happier.
Being More Confident About Something
So how can you make that happen in your own life? It’s a lot simpler than it looks.
There’s, of course, the mindset and believing in yourself to be who you want to be.
If you want to be an entrepreneur, say you are an entrepreneur.
If you are a writer, say you are a writer.
Remind yourself of the decision that you made and walk that path. Even if you’ve never made a sale before or any kind of tangible income.
Second is to start taking action towards that goal.
If I had this conversation a few years ago I wouldn’t be all that confident in myself. In fact, that was the case with my first conversation.
Thankfully the person I was talking to has always been a nice woman and actually encouraged me to volunteer at a local election.
I didn’t, but the thought was nice.
But generating some level of income can make a world of difference, even if it’s not a significant amount. Money is still money.
Furthermore having creative ideas and investing in your idea or business is a good practice as well. We all need to grow and be confident in ourselves as writers, entrepreneurs, or whatever we desire to be.
By doing these things we are taking steps towards achieving something grand, taking a bigger step forward and believing more in our story. This can only change the course as our mindset and our actions dictate where we will go.
That level of confidence changes our path as we travel along. We enter into a state much like what I explained above. Even the disapproving sounding people may be surprised after you talk a little about your success.
You’re not some poser or pretender. You’re out there hustling hard and doing something.
And that makes a difference.
To your growth!
