Context matters. The context here is KD joined the most winning team in NBA history, a team that was already the favourite in whatever game they played. As someone else noted below, he put himself in a position to win championships.

Of course, KD will contribute more than West, that’s a certainty. But how necessary are his contributions? It’s not like he joined a mid-level team and his play pushed them to the elite; the Warriors were already as elite as can be, literally.

David West joined the GSW in a ring-chasing move, knowing they really didn’t -need- him, but that he might be nice to have.

Did the 73 win GSW -need- Durant? Nope. He’s obviously great to have, but there was definitely no need, per se.
