Here it is, all you need to know about Donald Trump. The image of Trump staring at the eclipse through unprotected eyes speaks volumes about his character.

Trump doesn’t listen to advice from the “fake news”

Trump is ego incarnate, that much we know. However, until yesterday, I didn’t understand the lengths he would go for attention. Think about this picture. For weeks we’ve been told not to look at the sun without some kind of approved protection least we forever ruin our eyesight. Even without the onslaught of warnings, most people fundamentally understand that looking at glowing sphere of hot gas is a bad idea.

So, let’s start from the premise that Trump knew the dangers. This scenario is even more terrifying. Here is a man who is willing to permanently injure himself in order to generate headlines. Let that sink in. He has no regard for his own well-being so what are the chances he cares about you and me?

This picture shows a Trump who casually tosses aside science and sound medical advice just so he can once again be the topic of conversation. He ignores calls from his advisers not to look. The eclipse, a once in a lifetime moment, threatened Trump’s limelight, and he took matters into his tiny hands. Whether this move was calculated in advance or a spontaneous act of absurdity is beside the point. What matters is that he was willing to do something so ridiculous to garner attention.

It worked! What should have been a relatively benign news cycle, one that celebrated the communal experience of viewing a rare natural phenomenon, was contaminated by another giant ball of gas. The internet, cable news, and newspapers all ran stories about Trump’s idiocy.

The continued danger of Trump is that he knows what we respond to, what we click on, what we watch, and what we read. He’s the president which means he’ll always have a platform so long as he’s in office. We can’t turn away because his actions impact our lives. We have to watch this giant ball of gas, exposed, and without protection. Trouble is, balls of gas don’t last. They tend to either explode or implode. Here’s hoping for the latter.
