I was born and brought up before there was an Internet and I would disagree with “ But the most important difference is what happens after the newspaper was done: people talked to each other about what they’d just read. They could engage in a civic discourse about the news of the day, because they were all reading the same basic material.”

The wife and I do talk about the stuff we read about on our walls or interesting news — same with my work mates over a beer or coffee. I have never seen anyone in the train or bus talking to his/her neighbour over some stuff they have read in a magazine/book/newspaper.
