I assume the “23 countries” he mentioned, refers to a paper by Yerushalmy & Hilleboe from 1957 that criticized Keys’ 1954 paper (long before the 7 countries study was published). They did an ecological study of 22 countries and found a slightly smaller correlation between total fat intake and mortality from heart disease, but a stronger correlation with animal fats and protein. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/13441073
