So the 2023 is almost over, and one of your goals is related to languages. Maybe you are planning the travel of your dreams and would like to learn some basics of the local language of the country you are about to explore... Or you decided finally to learn English aiming to better jobs opportunities... Or perhaps you just want to learn a new language for fun. Everyone has a reason to learn a new language, and all of them are valid.

No matter if you are learning by yourself, or with the help of a tutor, the apps are excellent tools to complement our learning process that’s why I bring you 12 apps you should try in order to achieve your goal.

We can not talk about learning languages apps without mentioning the most popular free app for languages learning. According to the app information, Duolingo have over 300 million learners and offers 40+ languages. Although I don't deem this app is the best for intermediate or advance levels, the game-like lessons make Duolingo a good and funny option to have an introduction of your target language.

11. Nextlingua:

Another good option to start a new language is Nexlingua, the app currently offers English, German, Russian, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. You will start learning the basic: alphabet, vocabulary, phrases... Followed by conjugations, grammar, declensions... All of this in a simple and easy to use interface.

10. Cake:

As its name suggest, this app has a sweet and friendly interface. You can learn English and Korean from videos with subtitles, real English used in vlogs, celebrities, artists, movies, and TV shows.

Available in 35 languages, have an extensive library of 1000+ books with bilingual translation and adapted audiobooks to improve listening and speaking skills. If you prefer movies to books, don't worry! The app also have snippets from shows and movies to teach words and phrases for English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and German learners.

Co-founded by Steve Kaufmann one of the most popular polyglots in the world, who knows 20 language in different degrees, with LingQ you can learn English, Ukrainian, French, Spanish, Japanese, Turkish, Hungarian, Norwegian, Chinese, etc... The app contents thousands of hours of lesson, podcasts, interviews, and much more.

Can not be missing from this list, Google Translate is the best translation app for smartphones, completely free, with over 100 languages, and the best part: translate 59 languages with no connection.

Powered by "big data" algorithms, you can translate millions of expressions, words, phrases, illustrated by examples of real usages.

This useful tool is going to help you to solve all your doubts. With over 6.4 users worldwide, with hi native you can search any question, about grammar, pronunciation, translation, etc, or if you don’t find what you are looking for, you can post your own question.

3. Cambridge Dictionary +Plus:

The app of the most popular online dictionary in the world. The app have the option to create word lists for personalized practice with audio pronunciation in British and American English and access to the Cambridge Dictionary. Other features are word of the day, flash cards and quizzes.

2. Elsa Speak:

Powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), has 7100+ language learning activities and tools. The free version might be a bit limited. But if you are an intermediate or advance English learner who wants to enhance your pronunciation, trying the payment option is really worth it.

1. WordUp:

WordUp is an AI-based English vocabulary builder app, perfect to expand your vocabulary, the 25,000 words are ranked in the order of usefulness, according to your necessities and lifestyle. Learn with your knowledge map and daily reviews, from definitions, examples, pictures, videos, quotes, news, and more. The free version is already very complete, but for less than 15 us per year, you can have a plus accessing to phrasal verbs, idioms, and other useful features.
