The trouble is that you have to eat (and fund your research) some way. A lot of people recognize the problems with this system, but of course they’re mostly people who have not been rewarded by this system. The people who have managed to succeed in academia are far more averse to changing how things work — and they’re the ones on hiring committees. I’d love to fight the good fight, but I’d prefer to make a living wage even more than that, and many alt-academics like me are also voting with their feet/person-hours and getting out of the standard academic game, too.
