Three Words: Suicide Squad Sequel

DC Comics fresh new take on an antihero plot foreshadowed a groundbreaking, award winning movie, but instead lacked a strong plot while simultaneously falling into multiple cliches.

In a first for DC Comics, this antihero, pro-villain movie shared the story of four villains who are tasked with working together as heroes for a U.S intelligence officer. The movie itself was directed by David Ayer, and featured Deadshot played by Will Smith, Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie, Captain Boomerang played by Jai Courtney and Killer Croc played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

The movie itself is nothing new. Essentially, a bunch of rejects attempt to find their way again. The New York Times said it best “Her [Harley Quinn] character is the strongest proof that this movie, for all its rebellious posturing, is nothing but business as usual.”

While the movie followed a similar recipe as Marvel’s groundbreaking Deadpool, DC missed its mark.

The movie itself looked as though it bounced around from idea to idea without developing any of them. Sub-stories of each character were introduced throughout the movie that appeared as though they could create a completely separate movie based on that one character. However, these sub-stories were briefly introduced, short lived and failed to connect to a larger plot.

With the sub-story between Harley Quinn and The Joker and Deadshot and his daughter the movie seemed to endlessly drag on. While I waited until the end of the movie for something that would lead to a strong connection between all the characters and their sub-stories, there wasn’t one.

So as the highly anticipated movie of the summer ended, my high expectations and I left the theater disappointed. While the movie capitalized on it’s uniqueness and the “bad to the bone” mentality it seemed the same compared to all the other comic movies out there.

Now Suicide Squad 2 has briefly begun developing this film I can’t help but question if it will be worth it?
